Boeing has been doing a great job in term of producing safe, powerful, spacious, and long-range jets for the Business sector. The BBJ’s design and modifications is based on the 737-700 airliner. In general, the BBJ is part of the 737 family with its variants taking the modification of other Boeing jet. For example: BBJ2 takes the 737-800 while the BBJ takes the 737-900ER modifications.
The BBJ1 aircraft has a maximum range of 10,140km but before diving deep into its features, let’s skim through its History.
BRIEF HISTORY OF BBJ1
Following the successful partnership of these two powerful companies—Boeing and General Electric—the BBJ became a successful project certified in the market for customers to acquire or charter. The first of its kind was delivered on March 2001.
The BBJ aircrafts takes the form of other Boeing aircrafts. While the BBJ1 takes the form of Boeing 737-700, BBJ2 takes the form of Boeing 737-800 and BBJ3 takes 737-900ER in luxurious standards. Its manufacturing takes place at the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group manufacturing facilities at Renton in Washington, US. When a customer purchases one of these, the interior decoration is completed by any interior design company the customer chooses which are certified by Boeing. The jet is moved from the facility of production to the completion centre where all installations and paintings are made to the taste of the buyer.
FEATURES OF THE bBJ1
The BBJ1 was given the airframe design of Boeing 737-700 which improves its performance in terms of speed, higher range, lower noise, and lower emissions compared to the previous 737s.
The plane has an increased fuel mileage, range and altitude capacity due to its wings design. The manufacturers were also able to reduce the weight by making use of composite materials, graphite, Kevlar and carbon reinforced plastics for the ailerons, elevators and rudder.
All these factors relate in almost all BBJs.
BBJ1 cabin
The cabin can comfortably accommodate up to 50 passengers in addition to the executive lounge and luxurious private suite. The interior can be configured to include executive offices, conference rooms, private offices and, as usual, luxurious bedrooms. These configurations are done by certified companies where the jets are delivered to in “green” condition.
To make things a lot easier for the wealthy, personal environments can also be created. Example: Dining room, living room, bathroom and toilet. This jet only 4 crew members to roam the skies.
With its built-in stairs, you can get up and down from the plane without needing ground support, especially at busy or underdeveloped airports.
BBJ1 flight deck
The flight deck makes accommodation for both the pilot and co-pilot and it incorporates many features of Boeing 777. Its Glass-cockpit has a Rockwell Collins Flight Dynamics HGS-4000 head-up display and six Honeywell flat-panel liquid crystal flight displays. The HGS-4000 has improved low visibility take-off guidance, runway deceleration cueing and advanced display features for pilots to enjoy while flying.
Its communication systems include Rockwell Collins triple VHF and dual HF communications and Coltech selective calling system (Selcal). The Rockwell Collins Series 90 avionics system integrates with a dual automatic direction finding (ADF), TCAS II traffic alert and collision avoidance system, plus a predictive wind shear unit.
BBJ1 engine
The aircraft is equipped with two CFM56-7 turbofan engines manufactured by CFM International. The company is a joint venture between General electric of USA and Snecma of France.
The engines produce 27,300 pound force enabling the jet to fly at 140 knots approach speed and max cruise speed at 87km/h or mach 0.82. the BBJ1 travel range reaches up to . The jet take-off distance is 2494 metre and landing distance at 1372 meter.
The jet flies as high as 41,000 feet above the earth at a climbing rate of 3000 feet per minute or 15.24 metre per second. Its fuel tank capacity is 26,025 litres. It has a maximum take-off weight of 79,015 kg and a maximum landing weight of 66,360 kg.
Price of BBJ1
The price of this beautiful queen ranges from $57 million to $75 million depending on the interior decoration cost. According to Boeing’s claims in 2014, 152 BBJs has been delivered worldwide.
